Mid process

For my project I am going to use mono printing. I am going to put a image into the print with color around it. So far I have many practice pieces but I'm still not confident with exactly how I want to dispute the color yet. I am also debating on using a large or small piece of paper. I will be using the colors in the last two pictures above but not the same image. I am also considering using more the one image. I use a lot of envision when trying try different ways of placing the colors. I wanted to do lines of color but am also experimenting a lot with putting the color around the object. I have developed my craft a lot. For example I ventured into using paint brushes instead of a roller to get the desired look. I wanted to get a somewhat paint splattered look and messy look with the colors and a crisp and clean shape inside.

Artists blog post: Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali was a Surrealist from Spain. One of his more know pieces is The Persistence of Memory. It shows melting clocks on many different objects in a dry landscape. Some of his works had to do with religion or fear. I think he was trying to communicate his feelings through his drawings. He seems like a pretty strange guy but that is probably how he came up with so many strange ideas. One of my favorites is girl at the window because it has a relaxed atmosphere that also portrays sadness or loss.

Final blog post

When working on my project the first two studio habits that come to mind are observation and stretch & explore. I think of observation becuase I used many reference photos trying to get the texture of things like leaves and tree bark. I think of stretch & explore becuase I made a lot of mistakes and had to get somewhat creative to hide them. I also had a challenge using a somewhat unfamiliar materials and tools.  A lot of my drawing was not planned. What I had in mind wasn't coming through so I had to improvise. For example, the white tree in the picture above was originally an oak tree but I felt that it didn't look quite right so I fixed it as best I could. One of my main goals was to get better at sketching and I think I defonetly accomplished that goal. It took a lot of patients to draw everything out and I feel that helped me a lot. I also wanted to capture details and I also think that I accomplished that fairly well.  My last goal was to be able to disguise mistakes. That was a very challenging task throughout the project but I tried my best and the results were pretty good. At first I was looking at making a more up close landscape but the more I worked the more ideas came to me. At first I was weary if the large moon but it worked out great. I was also concerned with the smaller details in the distance but those turned out to be one of my favorite parts. Over all, I am very proud of my work and I believe that I did fairly well for one of my fisrt times using scratch paper.

Mid process blog

My attempt at shading.

 Small leaves to give detail.

I've used observation a lot. I've looked at a lot of things involving nature, especially tress and leaves. I'm surprised how easy it is to get different kind of shades with the scratch paper. I hope to get a lot of detail especially with lots of realistic looking leaves. I want to exaggerate small things and try to capture the beauty of colors even though my project will be in black and white. For my references I have random pictures of things like leaves or wood and I use my own ideas. I've learned a lot about having the patients to scratchevery thing in and not mess up too bad. One of the harder things about this is that you can't just erase your mistakes so you have to be really careful. By the end of this I hope to be a lot better at sketching and capturing details.

Getting light and dark areas to pop out.

Getting the smaller details.

(not related to inspiration, just gettign a feel for the tools)

I want to get the smaller details.

For my project I will be using black and white scratch paper in the biggest size possible (not sure exactly how big). I plan to use hatching and try to give every area texture. I want to draw smaller sketches of nature then bring them back and put the pieces together while adding my own touch. I especially want to catch the essence of fall and bring it to life without colors.

My goal for this project is to really get a feel for drawing landscapes. For me it is challenging and this is a great opportunity to get better. Scratch paper isn't the easiest materiel and I believe that this could help to improve my sketching skills with simpler things like pen or pencil. With the paper it will also be harder to cover up mistakes and it could help me to disguise mess ups and make them beautiful.
